Ruling coalition gains a foothold in Senate

ISLAMABAD, March 2: The ruling coalition, led by the Pakistan People's Party, consolidated its position in the Senate on Friday, taking its strength to 70 in a house of 104. And the prospect of many independents supporting it beckoned.

The PPP previously had 27 seats in the upper house of parliament, with five of them due to retire on March 11. With the success of 19 of its candidates, the PPP has become the single largest party in the Senate. Its total strength has now risen to 41, according to unofficial results...

Fierce clashes, suicide attack in Khyber agency; scores killed

LANDI KOTAL, March 2: At least 23 militants and 10 security personnel were killed in clashes in Tirah valley of Khyber tribal agency on Friday. In the same area, four militants were killed in a suicide attack on a Lashkar-i-Islam hideout by a boy reportedly commissioned by their rival Tariq Afridi group of Taliban.

(According to western news agencies, at least 22 people were killed in the suicide attack after Friday prayers in a mosque in Tirah valley while at least 10 soldiers and militants died in earlier clash around 10 kilometres away)...

RIYADH, March 2: Saudi Arabia has arrested 11 Pakistanis and Iranians for allegedly smuggling hashish from Iran into the kingdom, the interior ministry said on Friday, a charge that carries the death sentence.
