Tests in UK identify drug which caused havoc in Lahore
-----------------------------------------------------------------
By Asif Chaudhry
LAHORE, Feb 1: As the British Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has found one of the five suspect drugs — Isotab — contaminated, another report has unfolded the mystery behind the factors which have caused the death of over 100 patients.

According to sources, besides analysing Isotab samples, the MHRA and the School of Pharmacy, London, jointly worked on a case study of 30 registered patients of the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC)...

Allies ditch govt, lead oil protests
----------------------------------------------------------------
By Raja Asghar
ISLAMABAD, Feb 1: Government's allies led protests in the National Assembly on Wednesday against the latest increase in domestic oil prices, apparently forcing a day's delay for a vote on a Constitution amendment to validate more than 20 post-18th Amendment by-elections.

Lawmakers of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), the second largest ally in the Pakistan People's Party-led coalition government, were the first to stage a token walkout to protest against up to six per cent overnight increases in the prices of petroleum products at the start of the new session of the house, and much after their return to chamber, the Pakistan Muslim League-N, the largest opposition party, staged its own walkout on the same issue...

Firdous's briefing wrong-foots Malik
----------------------------------------------------------------
By Khawar Ghumman
ISLAMABAD, Feb 1: The usually bullish Interior Minister, Rehman Malik, had to face embarrassment at a cabinet meeting on Wednesday when he could not come up with a reasonable explanation for an inordinate delay in setting up a madressah regulatory authority.

Briefing reporters on the deliberations of the cabinet, Information Minister Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said setting up of the authority was a decision of the cabinet and the interior ministry had failed to implement it...

SC verdict not implementable, says Aitzaz
----------------------------------------------------------------
By Nasir Iqbal
ISLAMABAD, Feb 1: Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan treaded a fine line on Wednesday and performed a delicate balancing act between defending the prime minister who is facing contempt charges and convincing the Supreme Court that its NRO verdict for requesting the Swiss authorities to reopen money-laundering cases is not implementable.

But at the end of the proceedings he was asked to complete his arguments by Thursday before the tea-break and, if convinced by his arguments, the court would discharge the contempt or move ahead with formally framing the charge against Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani...

Sindh objects to new petroleum policy
--------------------------------------------------------------
By Shamim-ur-Rahman
KARACHI, Feb 1: Sindh has objected to the posting of a new petroleum policy by the federal ministry of petroleum and natural resources on its website without consulting them during its formulation, terming it a violation of the Constitution.

According to sources, the provinces contend that after the 18th Amendment no new commitment can be entered into and no lease can be renewed without the consent of the provincial government in whose area the property exists...

Pakistan not putting sufficient pressure on Afghan Taliban: CIA chief
--------------------------------------------------------------
By Anwar Iqbal
WASHINGTON, Feb 1: Pakistan is not putting enough pressure on the Afghan Taliban to make them seek a negotiated settlement in Afghanistan, says the CIA chief as a leaked Nato report claims that the ISI is directly helping these militants.

"Obviously, there's been insufficient pressure on the Haqqani Network, on some of the other elements — again, the allies of Al Qaeda such as the Commander Nazir group, the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan and then some others. And then needless to say, the Afghan Taliban has not been pressured sufficiently in the sanctuaries that it enjoys in Balochistan and in other areas as well," CIA Director David Petraeus told the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence...

Is This a Photo of the Next iPod Nano?

Posted: 01 Feb 2012 12:25 PM PST

It seems like it’s raining spy shots today. Hot on the heels of the purported iPad 3 photo BGR leaked this morning comes an image of, what several folks are calling, the next iPod nano.

Leading up to Apple’s Fall iPhone/iPod event last year, we heard a number of rumors that the next iPod nano would feature a camera. And although the refreshed device never surfaced, it appears that the product still very much exists…(...)

Samsung Big Game Teaser Teases Apple Fanboys

Posted: 01 Feb 2012 11:28 AM PST

You might have heard Samsung is spending big bucks to have a TV commercial air during the next Super Bowl. They’re so excited that they can’t help bragging about it all over the web, just like a high school girl who just scored a prom date with the star quarterback.

Trying to generate buzz prior to the big day, Samsung released a teaser that, as usual, makes fun of Apple fanboys for standing in line to get the new iPhone. Of course, Samsung wouldn’t have such a problem since no one actually ever had to get in line to buy a Samsung phone. That’s how popular they are…(...)

Leaked iPad 3 Details Show Quad-Core Processor and LTE Capability

Posted: 01 Feb 2012 09:05 AM PST

With presumably a couple months or so until the iPad 3 hits the shelves, I think we are way overdue for some good old rumors about Apple’s upcoming tablet.

Today’s rumor is brought to you courtesy of BGR, who apparently got their hands on some images from a source claiming to be in possession of an iPad 3. If I haven’t lost you yet, then keep on reading because there seems to be some good sense to all this…(...)

Rumor: Apple Shopping for TV Displays from Major Component Suppliers

Posted: 01 Feb 2012 05:00 AM PST

Even with an iPad 3 launch almost certainly on the horizon, much of the tech world’s interest still seems to be in Apple’s mysterious TV set. According to the rumor mill, the iPhone-makers are expected to enter the television space at some point in the next two years.

And there’s nobody pulling for that to happen more than Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. Munster has been the source of several “iTV” rumors over the past couple of months, and now he’s back with more gossip…(...)

Most of Your iPhone is Actually Made in the US

Posted: 01 Feb 2012 04:00 AM PST

Last week, The New York Times ran a controversial piece on the poor working conditions inside the factories of Apple’s supply chain. The report detailed awful labor practices including mandatory 60+ work weeks and hazardous working environments.

One of the many questions that arose in the wake of the article is, “why doesn’t Apple just make its products here in the USA?” That would mean more jobs for Americans, and labor laws to protect the workers. But what many folks don’t realize is that a lot of Apple’s handset is already made in the US…(...)
